Scope and Content General view from north-west, Glasgow College of Building and Printing, North Hanover Street, Glasgow The Glasgow College of Building and Printing and the Central College of Commerce were commissioned in 1960 and built 1960-4 by architects Wylie, Shanks & Underwood. The College of Building and Printing teaches design, printing and publishing, furniture and creative crafts, building and the environment, photography and television, and computing and media. This shows the 13-storeyed, coffin-shaped teaching block with continuous glazing on the north and south sides. The glass is divided by dark 'Vitroslab' panels and strips of Roman travertine limestone. On the roof is a gable-ended structure and water tower. The low building (left) is the assembly hall and gymnasium. This slab block was constructed from reinforced concrete which was cast to shape on the site. It was then clad in glass and stone creating a prestigious modern building for this large college. This college building have been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
