Scope and Content South central projecting canopy from east, Glasgow College of Building and Printing, North Hanover Street, Glasgow The Glasgow College of Building and Printing along with the Central College of Commerce were commissioned in 1960 and built 1960-4 by architects Wylie, Shanks & Underwood. The College of Building and Printing teaches design, printing and publishing, furniture and creative crafts, building and the environment, photography and television, and computing and media. This shows a concrete canopy above the entrance doors and cycle racks at the rear of the building. Concrete pilotis (stilts or columns used to support a building up to first-floor level) create an open area below the main building with its repeated patterns of glass and stone. This building was constructed at a time when the teaching of trades and skills was becoming more important, and this modern, purpose-built structure reflects this change in attitudes. This college building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
