Scope and Content Concert hall entrance from south, Carstairs State Hospital, South Lanarkshire Carstairs State Hospital was built in several stages. The buildings to the west of the site were built in the late 1930s to replace the criminal lunatic department of Perth prison. The buildings to the east were built 1956-8 to designs by architect Stewart Sim and feature small harled 'villas' with stone gables, buttresses and carvings in the manner of 16th-/17th-century traditional Scottish architecture. The hospital was extended and refurbished in the 1980s. This shows the carved stone entrance to the concert hall beneath a shaped central gable. A aluminium spirelet, or 'fleche', can be seen on the rooftop. The wings to either side curve inwards creating a welcoming courtyard space, and were designed to house the occupational therapy centre. Care was taken to avoid using flat roofs in the design of the hospital, to prevent them being used as hiding places for escaping patients. Further security measures included not installing pipes or posts which could be climbed, and fitting a perimeter fence with a curved top (which also helped to soften its appearance in the surrounding landscape). The east wing of this hospital has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
