Scope and Content Main buildings from south-east, Turnhouse Airport, Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport in 1953, designed 1953-4 by architect Robert Matthew, and built 1954-6. The building was designed to be easily extended to deal with the growing number of air passengers, and new sections were added in 1959 and 1965. It ceased to operate for passenger flights in 1977 when a new Edinburgh Airport opened, and is now used for freight. This shows the building from the airfield side. An external staircase leads up to a sun or 'waving' terrace, which was originally linked to a buffet within. The main exit doors were below this, with offices to the left, and the customs area to the right. The tallest section originally had windows extending to roof level. This building was designed to be especially impressive when lit by night, with rows of spotlights set into the ceilings of the main concourse building, reflecting in the glass. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
