Scope and Content Main building from north-west, Turnhouse Airport, Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport in 1953, designed 1953-4 by architect Robert Matthew, and built 1954-6. It was designed to be easily extended to deal with the growing number of air passengers, and new sections were added in 1959 and 1965. It ceased to operate for passenger flights in 1977 when a new Edinburgh Airport opened, and is now used for freight. This shows the main building which has a steel frame clad in timber, with local stone details to the lower levels. The largest block contains what was once the main concourse, which housed ticket desks, a newsagent's kiosk and a cafeteria on a balcony level. The block to the left contained offices, and that to the right the customs area. The interior of this airport contained furnishings either designed or chosen by the architect. Unusual items included a 24-hour insurance machine providing instant policies for the traveller, angular waste paper bins on long legs with iron carrying handles, and a specially-designed notice board for displaying posters. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
