Scope and Content Stair to sun terrace from south-east, Turnhouse Airport, Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport in 1953, designed 1953-4 by architect Robert Matthew, and built 1954-6. The building was designed to be easily extended to deal with the growing number of air passengers, and new sections were added in 1959 and 1965. It ceased to operate for passenger flights in 1977 when a new Edinburgh Airport opened, and is now used for freight. This shows the cast concrete staircase which leads up to a sun terrace from which people could watch aeroplanes arriving and departing. The railings are of cast metal with aluminium plates fixed to one side. The handrails are made from shaped and varnished timber. The block behind the stairs has timber cladding set with large horizontal windows. This sun terrace (also referred to as a 'waving area') was used for dining in fine weather, access being via the adjacent buffet. A 'pergola' once sheltered this area, suspended from flagpoles on top of the building. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
