Scope and Content Staircase in main concourse, Turnhouse Airport, Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport in 1953, designed 1953-4 by architect Robert Matthew, and built 1954-6. The building was designed to be easily extended to deal with the growing number of air passengers, and new sections were added in 1959 and 1965. It ceased to operate for passenger flights in 1977 when a new Edinburgh Airport opened, and is now used for freight. This shows the stylish metal rails at the sides of the concrete stairs which lead up to the cafeteria area above the main concourse. The handrail is made from shaped and varnished wood, and the stairs have raised rubber grip strips for safety. The ends of each stair extend at the sides to support the white-painted rails. Turnhouse Airport was built upon a steel frame with timber cladding on a local stone base level. The 'apron' area which leads to the tarmac is paved with alternating squares of concrete slabs and cobbles salvaged from Edinburgh streets. Interior furnishings were designed or selected by the architect. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
