Scope and Content Cottages and Stables, Union Canal, Woodcockdale, West Lothian The Edinburgh & Glasgow Union Canal was built between 1818 and 1822 as a barge canal. Its engineer, Hugh Baird, was the engineer of the Forth & Clyde Canal. It was designed for high-speed passenger transport, and is on the same level from Falkirk to Edinburgh. This shows a block of stables, with accommodation for horse-keeper and stores for grain and hay, built to provide horses for hauling boats on the canal. It is probably a survivor of a series of such stables used in connection with the fast passage boats which operated until the mid 1840s. This building has been used for many years by a group of Sea Scouts, led for a time by the Rev Hugh Mackay, a noted pioneer of canal restoration in Scotland. The Union Canal was officially closed in 1965, but was eventually reopened throughout as part of the Millennium Link in 2002. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
