Scope and Content Polmont (Basin), Union Canal, Falkirk The Edinburgh & Glasgow Union Canal was built between 1818 and 1822 as a barge canal. Its engineer, Hugh Baird, was the engineer of the Forth & Clyde Canal. Wharves were provided on the off side of the canal where there was likely to be enough traffic, and this was one of them. This shows the basin from the north east, with its stone-fronted wharf. The wooden sheds, mainly garages, had been placed on the quay which was probably used, in the brief heyday of the canal, primarily for passenger, coal and roadstone traffic. Note the weed growth. This photograph was taken on the occasion of a rally organised by the Scottish Industrial Archaeology Society to encourage interest in the preservation of the Union Canal, which had officially closed in 1965. The canal was eventually reopened throughout as part of the Millennium Link in 2002. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
