Scope and Content Kelvin Viaduct (Maryhill Viaduct), Maryhill, Glasgow There are two parallel viaducts here, the first of which was opened in 1858 by the Glasgow, Dumbarton & Helensburgh Railway, which linked the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway at Cowlairs with the Caledonian & Dumbartonshire Railway at Bowling, and extended the latter from Dalreoch to Helensburgh. This shows the viaducts from the east. The one nearest to the camera was added by the North British Railway after 1865, when they absorbed the Edinburgh & Glasgow and Helensburgh lines. The original viaduct, with the same size and shape of arches, is to the north west. Though Helensburgh trains were diverted on to the Glasgow City & District Railway when it opened in 1886, reducing journey times to central Glasgow, from 1894 this viaduct has carried trains bound for the West Highland Railway to Fort William, and from 1901 to Mallaig.
