Scope and Content Warehouses, Nos 44-72 James Watt Street, Glasgow Until the 1870s the Broomielaw and Anderston, Lancefield and Finnieston quays were the heart of Glasgow harbour, and the streets immediately to the north of the quays were largely occupied by warehouses. Grain imports, after the repeal of the Corn Laws in the 1840s, called for grain stores. This view, looking south east, shows two warehouses in James Watt Street built in 1847-48 and 1861, in the centre and right, and part of a third, on the left, built in 1864. The latter two were definitely, and the first probably, built for grain storage. The top storey of 68-72 was added in 1881. James Watt Street has the finest group, architecturally speaking, of warehouses in Glasgow. At the time these were built classical architecture was particularly fashionable in Glasgow, hence the classical treatment of what were at the time prestigious buildings. Only the facades of the 1847-48 and 1861 blocks survive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
