Scope and Content Victoria Bridge, (Market Street and Victoria Road), Aberdeen This bridge was opened in 1881, and spans the new channel of the river Dee, diverted to the south to permit the construction of the Albert Basin, completed in 1870. It links Aberdeen with the suburb of Torry, which housed many of the fisherfolk who provided men for the fishing fleet and women for fish processing. This shows the bridge from the north west. It was designed by J H Blyth, engineer, of Edinburgh, and is faced with local granite. Note the solid parapets, an unusual feature in a bridge of this type. Victoria Road, on its south side, was laid out to connect with it. This bridge replaced a ferry after a disaster in 1876, and is the lowest crossing of the Dee. It still carries heavy road traffic. With its slender piers, rounded cutwaters, and flat segmental arches it is a good example of a late 19th century masonry bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
