Scope and Content Cotton Mill (Union Works), College Street, Aberdeen The Aberdeen area is still noted for its paper-making industry, partly on account of the abundant supplies of fresh water in the river Don. The largest mill in the area was in the late 19th century the Stoneywood Mill in Bucksburn founded in 1770, and acquired in 1796 by Alexander Pirie. This shows part of the railway frontage of the envelope works and paper warehouse established by Alexander Pirie & Sons Ltd, probably in the 1880s. By 1970 envelope-making had ceased, and the building was being used as a paper store by Wiggins Teape, by then owners of the Stoneywood Mill. This works was sited next to Aberdeen Joint Station, and was linked by rail both to the Stoneywood Mill and to markets in the south. It was also close to Aberdeen Harbour, and the company had an extensive export business. In 1890 Union works made more than 13 million envelopes a week. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
