Scope and Content Electric Power Station, Cotton Street, Aberdeen This power station was the first one built by Aberdeen Corporation, and was constructed on a site next to the Corporation's gas works. It was opened in 1894, and was designed primarily to supply electricity for lighting. Its construction was supervised by the manager of the gas works. This shows the frontage of the station to Cotton Street, from the south west. The two-storey building with the central pediment was the engine hall, and to the rear was the boiler-house. The building at the far end, with its gable to the street, was part of the gas works. This works was the first in Scotland to be constructed by a municipality, and Aberdeen was the second city in Scotland (after Glasgow) to have electric street lights. The Cotton Street works was superseded in 1903 by a much larger works in Crown Street. The present status of this building is not known. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
