Scope and Content Hall Russell Shipyard (Aberdeen Iron Works), York Place, Aberdeen This yard was established in 1864 to build iron steamships by Hall, Russell & Co, who also made marine engines and boilers. Aberdeen had already developed a high reputation for wooden and composite sailing ships, but this yard was the first designed for iron shipbuilding. This shows the yard from the south west with a vessel on the stocks on the right, and a completed hull fitting out on the left, behind the jetty. These ships were typical of the size turned out by the yard in its last years. The yard went into liquidation in 1988, and was taken over by A & P Appledore, who closed it in 1992. The site has now been redeveloped. It was Aberdeen's last shipbuilding yard. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
