Scope and Content Buchanan Street Goods Station, Glasgow The Glasgow, Garnkirk and Coatbridge Railway's line from Sighthill to the top of Buchanan Street was not completed until 1849, by which time the Garnkirk Railway had become part of the Caledonian Railway. That company developed Buchanan Street Goods Station as its primary goods station in Glasgow. This view shows the large grain store at the east end of the main range of buildings, during demolition, with the cast iron columns which supported the floor visible above the partly-demolished floors. These columns were cast with fins on their lower sections between boards could be fitted to make grain bins. During the 1870s there was much competition between the three railway companies serving Glasgow for both passenger and freight traffic. The scale of grain traffic represented by this building is partly accounted for by the enormous horse population of the city. These buildings were demolished later in 1969.
