Scope and Content Kelvinhaugh Refuse Disposal Works, No 83 Gilbert Street, Glasgow This was one of a series of such works built in the 1880s and 90s by Glasgow Corporation Cleansing Department, after the introduction of water-borne sewage disposal had robbed domestic refuse of manurial value, and therefore of saleability. The new works incorporated incinerators. This view shows the works from the north east, with behind the wall in the foreground the ramp for carts delivering refuse to be incinerated in the building to the right. The building to the left was originally the stables and cart-shed housing the vehicles used to collect the refuse to be incinerated. This works was built in 1889-90, and incorporated this stables and dust-cart shed, originally with 50 stalls. It closed in about 1970 to make way for more modern treatment facilities, and has since been demolished. The modern plants have since in turn been superseded by landfill disposal of waste.
