Scope and Content Kelvinhaugh Refuse Disposal Works, No 83 Gilbert Street, Glasgow This was one of a series of such works built in the 1880s and 90s by Glasgow Corporation Cleansing Department, after the introduction of water-borne sewage disposal had robbed domestic refuse of manurial value, and therefore of saleability. The new works incorporated incinerators. This view shows the works from the north west, with the base of the very tall chimney, characteristic of such works, which produced the draught for the incinerator, which was housed in the three-storey building. On the left is the bay used by carts delivering refuse to be incinerated. This works was built in 1889-90, and had a stables and dust-cart shed, originally with 50 stalls, for the vehicles used in collecting the refuse to be treated in the incinerator. It closed in about 1970 to make way for more modern treatment facilities, and has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
