Scope and Content Queen's Dock (Pointhouse Road & Finnieston Quay), Glasgow This dock was originally planned by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1846, but it was not until 1870 that its construction was authorised. It was built between 1872 and 1880, but was opened by Queen Victoria in 1877, after which it was known as Queen's Dock. It had two basins, and was ungated. This view shows the entrance to the dock, looking south west into the river Clyde. When completed, the dock had a swing bridge over this passage, hydraulically operated. It was removed in the 1950s, but its position is marked in this view by the lower section of quay wall on the right. The dock was a major addition to the capacity of Glasgow Harbour, but proved inadequate to take all the traffic offering, and other docks were added in the 1890s and 1920s. In the 1950s and 60s traffic declined sharply, and Queen's Dock closed at the end of 1969. It has since been filled in and redeveloped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
