Scope and Content Prince's Dock (Govan Road), Glasgow This dock was built for the Clyde Navigation Trust between 1893 and 1897, and was originally known as Cessnock Dock It was on the south side of the river Clyde, opposite Queen's Dock, and had three parallel basins. The largest of the Govan Graving Docks opened off the west side of the entrance basin. This view shows the entrance basin of the dock from the entrance to Queen's Dock, looking south. Note the control tower for vessels using the dock, on the pier to the left, and the steam crane in the distance. The entrance to the No three graving dock is in front of the crane. Princes Dock closed in the 1970s and was quickly filled in. It was sold to a firm of house-builders, but was leased back to the Scottish Development Agency as the site of the Glasgow Garden Festival. After the Festival the site lay largely undeveloped until the late 1990s, when the Glasgow Science Centre was built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
