Scope and Content Stobcross Quay, Glasgow This quay was constructed as part of the Queen's Dock project and was completed by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1882. It was partly built on the site of Barclay, Curle & Co's Stobcross shipbuilding and repairing yard, closed in 1874. The quay is about 1km long. This view shows the quay from near its east end, looking west north west. On the left is Plantation Quay, formed in the 1890s as the riverside face of Prince's Dock, the entrance to which is at the far end of the quay. Note the complete absence of shipping on a once-bustling stretch of the river Clyde. Queen's Dock and Stobcross Quay were major additions to the capacity of Glasgow Harbour, but proved inadequate to take all the traffic offering, and other docks were added in the 1890s and 1920s. In the 1950s and 60s traffic declined sharply, and Queen's Dock and this quay closed at the end of 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
