Scope and Content Tunnel Street to Plantation Place, Harbour Tunnel (Stobcross Quay), Glasgow The Harbour Tunnel was authorised in in 1889, and completed in 1896. It was designed primarily to allow horse-drawn lorries to cross the Clyde without going upstream to Jamaica Bridge. Hydraulic lifts were provided at each end, and there were separate tunnels for each direction, and for pedestrians. This view shows the northern terminal of the tunnel from the south west. The vehicle lifts were entered from the back, in Tunnel Street. The arched doorways in this view gave access to the pedestrian tunnel, still open in 1970. In the distance is the office block of Barclay, Curle & Co's engine works. The development of motor vehicles made this tunnel redundant, and it closed to vehicles in the late 1930s. The hydraulic lifts were removed during World War II. The pedestrian tunnel closed in the early 1980s. The main tunnels have been filled with sand, and this terminal is now a casino.
