Scope and Content Detail of the Chancel, Crathie Church, Aberdeenshire Crathie Church, a Gothic-style cruciform (cross-shaped) church which stands in a secluded rural setting on the banks of the River Dee, was designed by the architect, Alexander Marshall Mackenzie, and built in 1893-5 as a place of public worship for the royal family when staying at Balmoral Castle. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1911. The communion table, in white Iona marble with veining in green and black, is raised on a marble plinth at the east end of the chancel. The Gothic-style reredos (screen), carved from a 300 year-old English oak, forms the background to the table against the grey granite walls, and is topped by figures of four angels holding shields. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the communion table and screen shortly after they were placed and dedicated by King George V and Queen Mary in 1911 as a memorial to King Edward VII who died in 1910. The screen was inspired by the stalls in King's College Chapel, Aberdeen, and contains much carved detail including the English rose and Scottish thistle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
