Scope and Content Nave, St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Lothian Road, Edinburgh, looking west from the chancel St Cuthbert's Parish Church, a large imposing Renaissance-style church with Baroque detailing, was designed by the architect, Hippolyte Jean Blanc, and built in 1892-5 at the west end of Princes Street Gardens on an ancient church site dating from the 12th century. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1895. The nave of the church is vast but plain, with a U-plan gallery, very deep at the west end, supported by slim columns. The ceiling is compartmented, and the church is lit naturally by round-arched windows at gallery level. The floor is mosaic, and the tall wooden pulpit (right), reached by a stair from the front of the chancel, is given a dominant position. In the late 19th century galleries and a central pulpit were the accepted form of Scottish ecclesiastical architecture. Blanc's raised wooden pulpit provided a focus of attention and the place where the minister preached and delivered his sermon. In 1897-8 the pulpit was replaced by a more elaborate Anglicised version, designed by Blanc and borne on four red Italian marble columns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
