Scope and Content Chancel, Lansdowne Parish Church, Nos 416-20 Great Western Road, Glasgow Lansdowne Parish Church, a striking Gothic Revival church standing in a prominent position above the east bank of the River Kelvin, was designed by the architect, John Honeyman, and built in 1862-3 for the United Presbyterians. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1913. The chancel, a three-sided apse, is framed by a broad pointed arch supported on massive stone piers. Above the oak-panelling, red marble wall-shafts with carved capitals spring from sculptured corbels carrying the rib-vaulted ceiling. The three stained glass windows were installed in 1865 by Ward & Hughes, London. The interior is relatively simple and unadorned. The focus of attention is the large panelled pulpit, installed beneath the chancel arch in 1910, from where the minister preached and delivered his sermon. The central communion table, in a variety of marbles, was also installed in 1910 and formed the base of the original pulpit. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
