Scope and Content Princes Pier Railway Station, Greenock, Inverclyde (now demolished and the site incorporated within the Clydeport Container Terminal) Princes Pier Railway Station, an impressive railway terminus overlooking the Firth of Clyde, was designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, and built in 1893 for the Glasgow & South Western Railway Company. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the building in 1894. This rather grand building, with its steeply pitched roofs and six Italianate towers, had a central booking office whose first-floor balcony looked out across the water. From each side, wings swept round to the quayside, terminating in large arched doorways flanked by small decorative towers. The Glasgow & South Western Railway Company's lines in the west of Scotland encouraged leisure travel to the seaside resorts along the Firth of Clyde, and huge rail/steamer terminal buildings were required to cope with the volume of holidaymakers travelling 'doon the water' at the height of the summer season.
