Scope and Content Chancel, St Cuthbert's Parish Church, St Mary's Road, Weirhill, Melrose, The Scottish Borders St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Melrose, originally designed by John Smith and built in 1808-10, was rebuilt in 1911 by the architect, John More Dick Peddie, after a disastrous fire in 1908 destroyed all but the tower. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior after its reconstruction in 1911. The chancel, lit by a large Venetian window, is approached by three steps from the nave. It is lined with African mahogany, and has two rows of choir pews on either side. The communion table, set against the wall under the window, bears a small brass table lectern. Fronting the chancel to the right are steps leading to the wooden pulpit, and behind, occupying the side aisle, a large pipe organ. The interior is simple and unadorned, with plain walls and relatively no decoration around the communion table in the chancel. The focus of attention is the pulpit, raised above the level of the pews, from where the minister preached and delivered his sermon. The lessons were read from the smaller lectern on the left.
