Scope and Content St Bride's Roman Catholic Church from the north-west, Whitemoss Avenue, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire St Bride's Roman Catholic Church was built 1963-4 to designs by the architectural firm of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia. The main church is a large rectangular brick structure which is entered via a cleft in the façade. A tunnel links the church to a single-storeyed presbytery and sacristy building. The 27.4m high campanile (bell tower) was temporarily dismantled in 1986 after becoming unsafe. This shows the huge mass of the load-bearing brick walls which provide interior seating for up to 800 worshippers. The walls are decorated with bands of raised brickwork, and with randomly-placed angled depressions. A 'dormer' window on the roof casts light onto the altar area beneath. The building is made even more impressive by its elevated position above the road, and by the tall brick campanile (right). The interior of this building features a free-standing gallery which provides additional seating above the main space. The altar is dramatically lit by roof lights, whilst the rest of the building is lit by light filtering through timber spars in the ceiling. A baptistry and confessionals are placed below the gallery. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
