Scope and Content Lanark County Buildings from the south-south-west, Almada Street, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire Lanark County Buildings were built 1960-4 to designs by the County Architect's Office of Lanark County Council, under the guidance of City Architect, David Gordon Bannerman. They consist of a 17-storeyed office block with a two-storeyed block below linked to a circular Council chamber. This civic headquarters complex is set within a paved entrance 'plaza' with flagpoles, fountains and pools. This shows the dramatic scale of the County buildings, the large wall of the slab block of offices contrasting with the circular council chamber below. The glass 'curtain wall' of the tower is glazed in purple-tinted glass, with white ceramic mosaic details. The Council chamber is built from 'Hoptonwood' stone finish, pre-cast concrete units on a base of Westmorland green slate. The tower block contains offices, public areas and restaurant on the 15th floor. Entry is via a first-floor terrace which is reached by a ramp and a bridge which are heated in winter to ensure visitors do not slip on snow and ice. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
