Scope and Content Dunbeath Castle, Caithness, Highland Dunbeath Castle is situated on a coastal promontory just south of the mouth of Dunbeath River. The present castle mainly dates from the early 17th century and was remodelled and enlarged to designs by David Bryce (1803-1876) in the late 19th century. In earlier times, a defensive ditch cut off the castle promontory from the mainland. This view shows Dunbeath Castle (foreground), the driveway and two areas of walled garden on either side of the driveway (centre). The small building in the northern walled garden (right) is a former laundry. The stable block can be seen amongst the trees to the left of the southern walled garden (centre left). There is also a boat-house on the shore to the right of the castle. Dunbeath Castle has a close historical association with the Sinclair Clan who first acquired it in the 16th century. In 1650 it was besieged by James Graham, Marquis of Montrose. The castle was sold by the Sinclairs in 1945 and remains a private residence. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
