Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating John Pattison, St Mary's Church, Carnwath, South Lanarkshire On this face, a winged cherub with long curled hair fills the upper part of the headstone, while beneath a skull and crossbones are flanked by a pair of Ionic pilasters, a form of architectural decoration which resembles a flattened pillar, and these are often seen on 18th- and 19th-century buildings across Scotland. The emblems used on this headstone convey a message of hope that although the mortal body would die (symbolised by the skull and crossbones), the immortal soul would live on. Symbols like these were well-known and appeared in everyday life and were not solely reserved for commemoration purposes. This gravestone commemorates John Pattison, who died in 1732. The inscription, according to a 1991 transcription, reads: 'Here Lyes ye corps/of John Pattison of hogs castle/Who died ye 26/Janr Anno. Dom. 1732/aged 49/& also John Pattison his/son who died 14 October/1742 aged 27'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
