Scope and Content Railway Station (Station Hotel), Station Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire The first station on this site was opened in 1856 by the Ayr & Girvan Railway, replacing the original Ayr station by the harbour. The new station was rebuilt in 1886 by the Glasgow & South Western Railway, incorporating, in the fashion of the time, a large station hotel. This view shows the main north and south-bound platforms looking south west from the footbridge linking them. The south-bound platform is on the left. The elaborate cast iron columns and brackets are typical of company and period. The main hotel range is to the right of and above the platform on the right. The integration of station and hotel was planned on account of the success of the railway company's St Enoch Hotel in Glasgow, similarly integrated with an important station. Ayr was at the time an important holiday resort, and centre for the Robert Burns tourist trade. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
