Scope and Content Station Hotel (Ayr Station), Ayr, South Ayrshire The first station on this site was opened in 1856 by the Ayr & Girvan Railway, replacing the original Ayr station by the harbour. The new station was rebuilt in 1886 by the Glasgow and South Western Railway, incorporating, in the fashion of the time, a large station hotel. This view shows the southern part of the main frontage of station and hotel from the west. The main entrance to the hotel is in the centre, with at attic level the coat of arms of the Glasgow and South Western Railway. Behind this building is the main north-bound platform of the station. The hotel was built on account of the success of the railway company's St Enoch Hotel in Glasgow, similarly integrated with an important station. Ayr was at the time an important holiday resort, and centre for the Robert Burns tourist trade, as well as being a significant centre for industry and agriculture.
