Scope and Content Bridge Mill, Girvan, South Ayrshire This large corn mill was one of the most advanced in Ayrshire, and had probably been rebuilt in the mid-late 19th century. It was powered by water from the River Girvan, driving a large breast paddle wheel, had four pairs of stones, three driven in the normal way, and the fourth overdriven, a very unusual practice. This view shows the mill from the west. The four-storey block was the mill proper and the waterwheel was on the gable in this view. The other buildings in the complex included a granary, stables and cart shed, and miller's house. The limewashing was typical of the area. Overdriving of millstones was common in windmills, but not in watermills, and involved suspending the top millstone from its drive shaft. The waterwheel was still there in 1953, but had gone by 1969, when the mill was owned by McQuater Bros, seed merchants. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
