Scope and Content Dock Gate, Victoria Dock, Dundee Harbour, Dundee Victoria Dock and the adjacent Camperdown Dock were constructed in 1863-75 to serve Dundee's growing trade in jute, flax and general cargo. Both were equipped with single-storey transit sheds on their north quays, and Victoria Dock had in addition a five-storey warehouse at its north-east corner. This shows a floating caisson dock gate at the east end of Victoria Dock. This was probably the gate of the graving dock on the south side of the east end of the dock. As can be seen, it has a footbridge over the top. The Victoria and Camperdown docks had declined considerably in importance by 1969, and the Victoria Dock and its graving dock have since closed to commercial traffic. There are plans to redevelop the quaysides, Victoria Dock is still home to HMS 'Unicorn', a wooden frigate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
