Scope and Content Swing Footbridge, Victoria Dock, Dundee Harbour, Dundee Victoria Dock and the adjacent Camperdown Dock were constructed in 1863-75 to serve Dundee's growing trade in jute, flax and general cargo. Both were equipped with single-storey transit sheds on their north quays, and Victoria Dock had in addition a five-storey warehouse at its north-east corner. This shows the southern section of a two section swing footbridge over the entrance to Victoria Dock from Camperdown Dock. Victoria Dock is to the right, and Camperdown to the left. The bridge could be swung manually into place. By 1969 there was an alternative access over the top of a floating caisson dock gate, and this bridge was little used. The Victoria and Camperdown docks had declined considerably in importance by 1969, and the Victoria Dock has since closed to commercial traffic. This bridge is still in position.
