Scope and Content Transit Sheds, Camperdown Dock, Dundee Harbour, Dundee Camperdown Dock and the adjacent Victoria Dock were constructed in 1863-75 to serve Dundee's growing trade in jute, flax and general cargo. Both were equipped with single-storey transit sheds on their north quays, and Victoria Dock had in addition a five-storey warehouse at its north-east corner. This shows a section of the transit sheds on the north quay of Camperdown Dock, looking north-west. The pillars are of cast iron, linked by riveted malleable-iron girders. Some of the pillars are used to take rainwater from the roof. Note the small lions' heads near the tops of the pillars. The Victoria and Camperdown docks had declined considerably in importance by 1969, and the Victoria Dock has since closed to commercial traffic. It now houses HMS 'Unicorn', a wooden warship of 1815. These transit sheds have now been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
