Scope and Content Panmure Works, Carnoustie, Angus This factory was built in 1857 by James Smieton & Son of Dundee to make heavy linen cloth, initially using both hand and power-looms, but later using power-looms exclusively. The company had its own housing, and provided an institute for its workers long before such provision became general. This shows the centre of the south frontage of the 1857 section of the works from the south west. This is the principal frontage, facing the Dundee and Arbroath Railway. The detailing of the building is typical of Dundee industrial architecture of the period. Smietons made a wide variety of cloths, including mixtures of jute, linen, tow, hemp and cotton, largely for the American market. The works seems to have been rail connected from the start. By 1969 it was being used as a store. It has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
