Scope and Content Ferry Pier & Terminal, Boat Brae, Newport-on-Tay, Fife This terminal was constructed as the southern terminal of a ferry to Dundee. The ramped pier was built in 1823 for the first steamboat ferry, to designs by Thomas Telford. In the late 19th century semicircular-roofed canopies, with a central gabled office, were added at the landward end. This shows the pier buildings on the right, with a block of shops and offices on the left, built in about 1880 to designs by C & L Ower. The ferry terminal had been disused since the opening of the Tay Road Bridge in 1966. Newport developed rapidly after the opening of the steam ferry in 1823, as a residential suburb of Dundee, and as a sea bathing resort. The opening of the Tay Bridge in 1878, and of its replacement in 1887 further encouraged growth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
