Scope and Content Kingston Dock, Glasgow This dock was the first to be built in Glasgow, by the Clyde Navigation Trust. It was opened in 1867. It originally had open timber-fronted quays which were destroyed by a fire in 1914, with the adjoining transit sheds. The quay walls were rebuilt in concrete during the First World War. This shows the dock from the top of Randolph, Elder & Co's engine works in Tradeston Street, with part of the Kingston Grain Mills on the right. The concrete quays and brick transit sheds date from the 1914-18 rebuilding. In the background is the Kingston Bridge, under construction. Kingston Dock was only used by small coasters by the mid 1960s, and was closed in 1966 to make way for the construction of the Kingston Bridge, which crosses its west end. The dock has since been filled in, the transit sheds demolished, and the site redeveloped for housing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
