Scope and Content Randolph & Elder Engineering Works, Nos 13-23 Tradeston Street, Glasgow This works was built in 1858-60 for Randolph, Elder & Co, successors to Randolph, Elliot & Co, who had been established for several years in Centre Street as millwrights, engineers and founders. The new works was designed to build large compound marine steam engines to John Elder's patent. This shows the second-floor gallery on the east side of the west wing, with the built-up crane-rail support, with suspender rods for the lower galleries, and diagonal bracing. The flooring in this area was altered when the building became a seed and fertiliser warehouse for Alexander Cross & Sons c.1890. This works was at the time the largest and most innovative one in Glasgow. It was designed by William Spence, architect. It was closed in about 1874 when the owners, by then John Elder & Co, built a new works in Govan. After a long period as a seed store it was demolished in 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
