Scope and Content Randolph & Elder Engineering Works, Nos 13-23 Tradeston Street, Glasgow This works was built in 1858-60 for Randolph, Elder and Co, successors to Randolph, Elliot & Co, who had been established for several years in Centre Street as millwrights, engineers and founders. The new works was designed to build large compound marine steam engines to John Elder's patent. This shows the junction between the south and west wings of the works, with the cast iron stanchions supporting the built-up wooden beam carrying the rail for an overhead crane. The pulleys on the beam were installed to carry ropes or chains to pull the crane along the rails. This works was at the time the largest and most innovative one in Glasgow. It was designed by William Spence, architect. It was closed in about 1874 when the owners, by then John Elder & Co, built a new works in Govan. After a long period as a seed store it was demolished in 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
