Scope and Content Waterwheel from west, Preston Mill, East Linton, East Lothian This shows the 6-spoke, wood and iron low-breast wheel which drives 2 pairs of grinding stones that ground meal in the mill. The wheel is turned by water hitting the paddles and was produced by the firm of Alex Mather, Fountainbridge between 1860-1910. The mill building has been rebuilt and it is possible that the wheel has been moved from its original position. The wheel was damaged by a flood in 1992 which prompted the National Trust for Scotland to restore and renovate the wheel. Rotting wood has been replaced This mill is a 1-storey and attic rubble range with a circular kiln and a detached single-storey office and granary block. The mill was founded in the 17th century and has been in the ownership of the National Trust for Scotland since 1950 who have opened it as a visitor attraction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
