Scope and Content Paper Staining and Cardboard Works, Nos 12-38 Houldsworth Street, Glasgow This works was established in 1873 by George Stark & Sons, paper stainers, cardboard and pasteboard manufacturers. This firm made products for use by printers and bookbinders, especially printers making advertising cards. This shows the works from the south-west, looking along Houldsworth Street, illustrating its trapezoidal plan, fitted into an awkward site. Houldsworth Street was laid out in the early 1870s as part of the development of the Cranstonhill Estate, largely as an industrial area. Starks later moved to the former Grovepark Mills in North Woodside Road, and were still there in the mid 1960s. In 1924 the Houldsworth Street works was occupied by R Hamilton & Son Ltd, calenderers, silk finishers, tambouers, makers up, and export packers. The building was demolished in about 1970.
