Scope and Content Craigmark (Minnivey) Mine, Burnton, Dalmellington, East Ayrshire The Dalmellington Iron Works was opened in 1848, and closed in 1921. The surviving coal mines sunk to serve the works were sold to Bairds & Dalmellington Ltd in 1931 and were nationalised in 1947. The National Coal Board drove the Minnivey 4 and 5 mines in 1955. This shows a locomotive shunting loaded coal wagons (out of sight to the left) and dirt wagons at the south-west end of the mine sidings. These side-tipping dirt wagons were used for disposing of dirt on the bing. The locomotive was built in 1947 for the National Coal Board. Minnivey Mine was intended to have a life of 40 years, but declining demand for coal led to its closure in 1975, and the dismantling of some of the surface buildings. The site is now used by the Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group as their depot.. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
