Scope and Content Craigmark (Minnivey) Mine, Burnton, Dalmellington, East Ayrshire The Dalmellington Iron Works was opened in 1848, and closed in 1921. The surviving coal mines sunk to serve the works were sold to Bairds & Dalmellington Ltd in 1931 and were nationalised in 1947. The National Coal Board drove the Minnivey 4 and 5 mines in 1955. This shows the inclined railways emerging from the drift mines, to the right. The empty National Coal Board wagons were waiting to be filled and taken to the washery at Waterside. Above the building on the right is the bing where colliery waste was dumped. Minnivey Mine was intended to have a life of 40 years, but declining demand for coal led to its closure in 1975, and the dismantling of some of the surface buildings. The site is now used by the Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group as their depot. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
