Scope and Content Lion Foundry, Eastside, Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire The Lion Foundry was the largest of the Kirkintilloch foundries, established in about 1880 by three foremen from the Saracen Foundry, Glasgow. The Lion, like the Saracen, specialised in architectural work, including ornamental castings. They made many bandstands, gates and railings. This shows the foundry from the south. The buildings seen here are moulding shops. The two cupola furnaces in the distance were installed in the 1960s to melt iron for casting spun iron pipes, an unsuccessful venture. On the right is the site of Kirkintilloch Station, closed to freight in 1966. The Lion Foundry suffered in the mid 20th century from declining demand for its traditional products, and turned unsuccessfully to making spun iron pipes, and more successfully to making telephone kiosks and counterweights for fork-lift trucks. It closed in the 1970s and has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
