Scope and Content Johnstone Mill, High Street, Johnstone, Renfrewshire The first mill on this site was built in 1782 by Corse, Burns & Co to spin cotton using Richard Arkwright's package of processes. This was eventually taken over by William Paton & Co for making braided boot and shoe laces, twine and 'smallwares'. They rebuilt the south end of the 1782 mill. This shows the north end of the 1782 mill, which was originally water-powered, with the rebuilt section to the left. The range of two-storey buildings to the left was probably part of the cotton-spinning complex. The tower contains a water tank for a sprinkler system for fire control. By 1970 the manufacturing capacity of the complex had been concentrated largely in the later part of the mills, and the remains of the 1782 mill, known as the 'Old End' was used for storage. It was the oldest surviving cotton-spinning mill in Scotland. The complex is still in use by Patons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
