Scope and Content Barbush Mill Linen Thread Works, High Street, Johnstone, Renfrewshire This large complex was established in 1849 by Finlayson, Bousfield & Co, linen-thread manufacturers. At that time linen thread was extensively used in sailmaking, boot and shoe manufacture, and sack and bag making. The firm took over two existing cotton-spinning mills, eventually demolishing both. This shows the two main spinning and doubling ranges in the complex. The western part of the building on the right was built in about 1849, and it was extended to the east in about 1860. The building to the left was probably built in about 1880. All were of 'fireproof' construction. Finlayson, Bousfield & Co Ltd eventually became part of the Linen Thread Co Ltd, a classic defensive amalgamation. Declining demand for the product led to the liquidation of the company in the late 1950s. The later mill in this view was demolished in the 1970s, but the other still survives.
