Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows a calender used to close up the texture of jute cloth before it is made up into sacks or bags. This machine has a series of rollers, some made of steel and some of compressed paper, which are kept under pressure. The cloth passes in snake-like fashion between the rolls. The rolls of jute seen here were typical of the output of the mill at that time. After calendering the cloth made into sacks, which were then passed through a mangle before being packed in a hydraulic press to squeeze the air out of it to reduce its bulk to a minimum for shipment.
